Steve Passfield is well known around the country as the leader, front man and raconteur of the award winning Handpicked Band, Finalists in the Fosters Battle of the Bush 1998, 1999, 2000 held in Tamworth and winners of the Carlton Battle of the Bands 2001. Handpicked released 3 independent albums, The Country Salute, Best of Mates and Handpicked Live at the Mean Fiddler that, together with regular appearances at festivals and picnic race meetings all over the country, have given Steve Passfield and the Handpicked Band a well known brand name in roots music circles since the late 1980’s.
Always one looking for a challenge and to explore emotions through his song writing, Steve released his first solo album in early 2007 where his folk and bluegrass influences are very much in evidence. A diverse collection of 14 songs which range from Australiana that would do John Williamson or Colin Buchanan proud - such as the powerful Australian Spirit and the delightful Lady Of The Top End - to touching and tender tales of people. Acceptance - the tale of a special little boy - has Steve helping people with disabilities in society, and the disturbing Break Free touches our hearts. Songs like the cool swing-inspired Broke, the tongue-in-cheek Trouble and Hillbilly Redneck Town demonstrate the breadth of Steve’s talents, and his tribute to Slim, To Sing With Slim, is a real gem. Other standout songs include the wonderful A Man Will Risk It All, written with his producer Rod McCormack and the Kevin Bennett co-write, This House, an old timey, happy break up song. With a mix of provocative original songs, great tunes and a quick wit, Steve Passfield will take you on a musical ride to escape the rat race.
The first single off the album, Goin’ it Alone, was released in March 2007 and has been getting wonderful responses from radio presenters and listeners alike whilst the video has jumped into the Top 30 on the Country Music Channel.
On recent television appearances you have seen Steve as the relaxed, confident but sensitive performer that he really is.
What does the future hold for Steve? He says he’s, “Not sure but it’s exciting being on the ride!” If recent festivals are any indicator, things are just beginning for Steve.
Steve is truly an independent artist who is working away behind the scenes on his musical craft and promoting what he believes in, to take music lovers to places beyond the roads and the highways.
